Complaints from downtown merchants
Staff
Eagle Pass
Several merchants of Main Street, Rio Grande and Commercial Streets have contacted the News Gram and are very upset that the stores which burned down two weeks ago are an eye- sore and the area is full of burnt debris.
Individuals and mer- chants say, "This is how we put food on our tables and our customers are struggling to cross the sidewalk." Even shoppers who walk down Rio Grande St. have to get off the street and walk on the street itself because the sidewalk is full of debris.
Downtown is visited daily by hundreds of shoppers and the place looks completely in ruins. They believe that the city should take action on the matter, by
cleaning the area or forcing the owner to remove all debris.
If it would be a citizen or home with this type of debris, Code Enforcement would come and issue a citation or a fine. Why is nothing being done in this case?
One merchant said, "If nothing is done because it is evidence of a fire and more research is needed, at least cover that space with sheetrock because merchants are making an effort to move forward after this tragedy in Downtown Eagle Pass."
A new business just opened shop caddy corner to that area and the view of the burned building is definitely not a pleasant sight.
Hopefully the city can do something to benefit our concerned downtown merchants.
