A month after blaze, downtown businesses in limbo
Almost a month after the fire that consumed the downtown store Casa Chicho, director of Main Street Eagle Pass, Joe Cruz, keeps in touch with the owners of the property in order to know the future of these businesses.
You may recall that last June 25, as fire fighters braced themselves from the high pressure blasts of water that pushed them back and they attempted to extinguish the blaze which destroyed Casa Chicho as flames cut through the smoke and bit back out of control for what seemed to be a good thirty minutes as business owners looked on in dismay and disbelief in the heart of the city, on Commercial Street and Rio Grande.
Ninel which is adjacent to Martha's Gifts and Novelties, Joyeria Piscis and possibly another business next to Casa Chicho, Bonita Shoe Outlet were those affected by the fire with Ninel, Joyeria Piscis and Casa Chicho completely destroyed.
Cruz reported that the Pecos family owns the distressed property and is originally from Eagle Pass, but currently resides in Kingsville.
"They are in the process of removing the debris and analyzing their options to determine if rebuilding is an option," added Cruz, "The Main Street Project is here to assist these businesses with matching funds if they wish and the Texas Main Street Center has architectural assistants available at no cost to the owners of the affected buildings."
