Members of the Committee on Health and Human Services met on Wednesday in their final preparations for the Eighth Annual Back to School Health Fair at the Lewis Farms Community Center.

An impressive gathering of leaders from across the landscape of law enforcement, education, elected public officials, local public service entities, broadcast media and health services were present. The meeting was conducted by Hector Mario Guerra who is coordinating the Back to School Health Fair and the Stuff the Bus activities as well.

"This is the 8th year that we organize this event in Eagle Pass, Del Rio and Brackettville," stated Guerra, "These events are spinoffs of the Colonias Initiative and the Office of Border Affairs.  We have up to 10 events now including the Stuff the Bus campaign this weekend at the Maverick County Lake at 8:00 AM."

He added that these events are held everywhere from Rocksprings to Carrizo Springs and he sets these dates with months of anticipation in order for these services and agencies to be available because this is one of the areas with most need as opposed to an El Paso, Laredo or Brownsville.

"The more supplies we can get this weekend the better and the more children we can provide for."

The committee discussed various topics ranging from the final public relations push, site planning and logistics, crowd control and some of the generous donations from different companies and local vendors.

The health fair is a free event held for the benefit of children and families in Eagle Pass and Maverick County.

The event will involve human service agencies and health and medical professionals and local organizations that provide health screenings free of charge to children and families of Eagle Pass.

Besides health screenings, information on health care and other healthy activities are provided as well as the distribution of school supplies which  will be distributed free to children who come to the fair while supplies last.

The Eighth Annual Fair will be held on Thursday, July 24 at the International Center for Trade from 10:00 AM to 2:00 PM.
