A concerned neighbor who happened to be home from work on this fateful day was the first to notice the smoke coming from the burning mobile home and even assisted in breaking down the door to the structure.
"I was at home from work because of the rain and I noticed smoke coming out of the home. We tried to break windows to get in when deputies arrived, then we broke down a sheet of plywood and we saw Briseño lying face down on the ground. We thought he had collapsed because of the smoke so we dragged him out of the home and turned him over. This is when we noticed he had a gunshot wound to the chest, the children were in a room at the end of the trailer" stated Juan Rocha of Carrizo Springs, "This is when authorities arrived and we were asked to leave the scene. We didn't see the children. We couldn't see anything because of the smoke and we didn't have a mask so we couldn't see them."
Rocha, who utilizes the assistance of a hearing aid said that he did not hear the shots because he did not have it in his ear at the time of the incident, although he imagines there must have been at least three shots fired.
The shocking incident has left the South Texas town in disbelief and although no motive has been released, the family was and is very well known and local authorities are investigating the circumstances and events that lead to this tragic situation.
Fire Department vehicles and law enforcement units surrounded the area around the home and kept family and concerned friends away from the crime scene. A candlelight vigil was held Thursday night following the tragedy and hundreds came out to pay their respects to the large family that are the Carmonas in this locale. County Commissioner Juan Carmona addressed the crowd on this night and emotionally called out to his niece and nephew who are the innocent victims of this tragedy.
"I came by to check it out (As he heard there was simply a fire in the home), then they told us something tragic had happened. We're a big family and we're always trying to help the community," added the commissioner, "My niece and my nephew were great kids and we're going to miss them."
County Judge Frank Ponce also addressed the gathering in support of his colleague on Commissioner's Court who asked the citizens of Carrizo Springs to come to this family's aid in its time of most need as they work to raise funds for their impending funeral.
"The kids had no reason to lose their lives, and if you had been here to see their mother, she was questioning her Lord for allowing such a thing to happen," said the judge.
The mother of the children Jessica Carmona had to be rushed to the hospital where she remained for the entire evening under sedation.
A fundraiser is scheduled for today at 11:00 AM at the Fire Department where the Dimmit County Sheriff's Department will be selling brisket plates with all the trimmings for the family.
"There are no words to describe how we feel, because we love them. We'll always keep loving them," concluded Commissioner Carmona.
