The Eagle Pass News Gram was on hand to see the signing of three Lady Eagles to the Laredo Community College Palominos on Tuesday as Claudia Cruz, Samantha Fuentes and Vivian Ramirez all signed national letters of intent to the school.

Assistant Principal John Byrne welcomed the crowd gathered to witness the signing before turning over the podium to Coaches Oscar Ruiz and Coach Kristy Lansford, the woman who will take these three young ladies forward in their athletic careers.

"I really look forward to going to LCC and playing with my right fielder and first baseman," stated Cruz, Coach Coca Ruiz' Lady Eagle catcher, "I plan to continue catching or wherever Coach Lansford needs me.  I've played every position except pitcher."

"I would like to thank my parents who've been there to support me my whole life," said Fuentes, the Lady Eagles' All-District first baseman.  When asked if she had visited the campus to which she replied, "Yes I have, I'm looking forward to playing softball and I plan to study nursing."

"I'm very blessed to have this opportunity," said Ramirez who has excelled in right field for the Lady Eagles, "I want to major in education and minor in business and marketing.  Coach Langsford is very excited for us all to come together to have a good team."

Ramirez hopes to come back to Eagle Pass with her degree to teach and one day hopes to open a day care facility in our fair city.

When asked about their last series against San Marcos she added, "I really feel we should've had it, a few things didn't go our way.  Any other day we would've had them."

"I'm very happy for them," commented Coach Ruiz, "They deserve everything that is going to be given to them, especially going to college and being able to showcase their talents setting the foundation for the other girls to follow."

We then caught up with new Palomino Head Softball Coach Kristy Lansford who seemed to be thrilled to sign these young ladies to the program, "I'm so excited about the potential, of starting something and building something that will last for quite a long time," says the California native who has been coaching for 17 years and played her junior and senior year at Cal State Bakersfield, "Coach (Troy) Van Brunt is very enthusiastic about the program and so excited about Eagle Pass."

The team has signed one player from California, a pitcher from Mission High School, a catcher from Weslaco and they plan to have open tryouts in Laredo to get about ten other players from the area to begin the new and improved Palomino program.
