"First of all I want to thank all the voters that came out for all the candidates. All the candidates were great. I'd like to thank the voters of Precinct 2 for the support they gave to both candidates for Mrs. Chacon and myself, I want to say that I didn't just win this election, the people of Precinct 2 won," said the new commissioner. When asked about the fact that this is a critical time in Maverick County politics and the trust citizens have in our elected officials, she had the following to say, "Precinct 2 needed good representation and they made a good choice. They're going to have the respect that they need."
In the closest race to call, the heated race for former commissioner Cesar Flores' vacant Precinct 4 seat, Robert Ruiz outlasted a late push by Guadalupe Cardona to win his place on Commissioner's Court. Ruiz won the preliminary vote 355 to 293 and edged Cardona in the popular vote 224 to 220. Ruiz won the election by a total of 579 to Cardona's 513.
"It was a team effort, but at the same time I'd like to thank Mr. Cardona. He put up a good fight. I thank him for that. He came over and shook my hand, I mean this is a small community. There's no need to be at each other's throats, we will continue to move forward," stated the victor, and when asked to comment on the overall turnout and how our people came out to voice their collective concerns for our county he added, "I'm very happy with the turnout. Rosy Cantú will be an excellent commissioner. We'll be there to help her, we'll click and bring something better for this community."
In the race for Justice of the Peace for Precinct 1, Kina Mancha doubled the amount of votes cast for Charlie Ruiz 291 to 111 in early voting and 215 to 114 in the popular vote to win handily by a grand total of 506 votes to 225.
"Thank you to all the voters of Precinct 1it was a long hard battle. Thank you to Charlie, you know. Good luck and God Bless," said the incumbent just moments after her victory was announced.
Overall, the numbers while impressive if you look at the turnout by precinct, were still low as at least 2,800 voters came out in this election, while all elections are important and we should encourage all 28,405 registered voters in Maverick County to participate in the democratic process, just at 10% of our voters actually took the time to do so.
In the race for United States Senator, Maverick County voters have spoken and David Alameel is our choice to face John Cornyn in November after he romped over Kesha Rogers and in the race for Land Commissioner it is the wishes of the voters of Maverick County for Jim Hogan to run against George P. Bush in November who outlasted Richard "Kinky" Friedman 1,211 to 916.
The interest was there by precinct and that is a good sign that times are a' changing in Eagle Pass and Maverick County.
