In a strange turn of events late Sunday, Eagle Pass Police were summoned to 150 Pierce St. where a man and a woman were found collapsed in the area in front of some shanties under the Garrison Street overpass.

According to Justice of the Peace Tere Melendrez, who was called to pronounce 43 year-old Nora Margarita Romo deceased, the woman had apparently died of an overdose and a man who has been identified as James Lee Chancey, 33, was transported to the Fort Duncan Regional Medical Center.

According to witnesses who saw the couple drive up in a white in color Suburban, the couple were arguing before they both collapsed.  A resident in the area made the 9-1-1 call and at least four EPPD units and an ambulance were summoned to the area which was immediately secured and blocked off.

Officers arrived to find Romo unresponsive and Chancey still breathing.

Eagle Pass Police Chief Alberto Guajardo informed The News Gram that Judge Melendrez had ordered an autopsy and the body was transported to the Webb County Medical Examiner's Office in Laredo while Chancey remains in critical but stable condition at the Fort Duncan Regional Medical Center.

The case remains under investigation by the EPPD Criminal Investigations Division.
