"It's important that we get new blood to come into the city to be able to further our community," stated Napo Zamarripa who graciously awarded a scholarship on this night, "The higher the learning the higher the scholarship, I think that every young man and young woman should aspire to something higher than just a high school diploma which is fantastic, but I think obtaining a college diploma should be the ultimate goal."
"This is actually the work of the staff of the Housing Authority who got together and raised funds to make it possible for these students to get a little bit of financial support towards their education. One of the things that we strongly believe in the Housing Authority is making people self-sufficient, so this is one of the first steps in achieving that, so we congratulate the students who received these scholarships, we're giving eight students out of the entire district scholarships," stated Mary Velasquez, Executive Director of the EPHA, "We wish them the best of luck so that they can come back to the community to serve."
"The Maverick County Sheriff's Department is always willing to work with youngsters and that was one the priorities of my administration, to work with the youth of Maverick County, because they are going to be the leaders of this community and I'm very proud to be here," said Sheriff Tom Schmerber who gave four $500.00 scholarships to our students, two at Winn and two this evening, "To present these scholarships to two outstanding students. I know they are going to succeed in the future."
Loris Tovar, Loan Assistant for Plains Capital Bank had the following to say about the significance of this event, "It is very important how the businesses of the community get involved in events such as this, where we make contributions to the futures of our students and to the future leaders of our community."
