City Hall Council Chambers were full on Monday mid-day as law enforcement and public safety administrators, first responders and other members of the Eagle Pass Fire Department staff came together to be recognized during National EMS Week, but also en masse to give Fire Inspector Luciano Rodriguez an appropriate sendoff on this his last day of a long and illustrious 45 year career.

When the time came to recognize Rodriguez, the members of the EPFD clapped in cadence as they lined the stage of Council Chambers after an upbeat yet emotional PowerPoint presentation and video which allowed each of his colleagues to etch a personalized message to their friend on a dry-erase board some of which coaxed the entire force to burst into laughter.

Rodriguez began as a radio dispatcher in 1969 before becoming an officer in the EPPD.  He became a fire fighter in 1973 and rose to the position of Fire Inspector in 1992.

It was an appropriate tribute to a respected man in the force and in this community.  Mayor Ramsey English-Cantú was on hand to present Rodriguez with an amazing plaque which symbolizes his efforts and dedication as well as to symbolize the time he will have on his hands in his retirement as an award clock sits atop of the silhouette of a fireman, a first responder.

The plaque read 'In grateful recognition for 45 years of service to the Eagle Pass Fire Department and the citizens of Eagle Pass, March 1969-May 2014'.

Dr. James Vretis, Assistant Medical Director for the EPFD addressed the EMT's and our EPFD personnel in reference to the job they do on a daily basis, "These guys will see what most people won't see in their lifetime," mentioning the fact that our EMT's see people being born and seeing people die in their line of work.

Vretis stated that he is impressed with their resilience, "When there's a major incident, they don't show their grief, they're very resilient and they take their job very seriously."

Then the physician said something very symbolic, but very true, "They stand between Death and the patient and they rip the patient from Death."

These frontline personnel, often performing their medical duties and law enforcement responsibilities in diverse, austere and often dangerous environments, provide a critical piece of homeland security for our Nation. With all of their work, whether in the federal, state or local arena, EMS providers are an important part of our communities. While they protect us, we encourage them to take care of themselves, both physically and mentally. The stresses EMS providers take on are heavy and while it is admirable they accept these responsibilities, it is also admirable to seek help when needed.

The Eagle Pass News Gram salutes our EMS personnel, Luciano Rodriguez (Or Chano as he is affectionately known to his friends at the Eagle Pass Municipal Golf Course) and all of our first responders during this week and throughout the year as you continue to be there for all of our citizens 24-7.
