to.

Veteran's Benefit Fair and Job Fair held Saturday
A.D. Ibarra
International Center for Trade
Many times the individuals who make the ultimate sacrifice for the benefit of our nation, those who go overseas to fight in conflicts which can make or break the peace that we all cherish around the world in third world countries suffering from such catastrophic conditions such as Post Traumatic Stress Disorder ad other mental issues, brain damage, disabilities and other issues may not know who or where to go through to receive the help they need.
The third annual Veteran's Benefit Fair and Job Fair was held on Saturday at the International Center for Trade and the Eagle Pass News Gram caught up with Janice Casillas who was instrumental in getting this event off the ground along with Jose Faz and the Middle Rio Grande Workforce Center who informed us of the significance and the importance of this event.
"This is the third year of the Veteran's Benefit Fair and Job Fair. Not only are there benefits here, but there are also employers here to hire veterans and basically anybody who is unemployed, and basically two years ago, it started in Uvalde then it went to Del Rio, this year it's in Eagle Pass, next year it'll be in Carrizo Springs. We want to thank Middle Rio Grande, the County of Maverick for allowing us to be here," said Casillas.
When asked about the viability of the fact that many employers are hesitant to hire veterans, Casillas had the following to say:
"We are really excited about the young veterans who are here today. We're trying to get them employed also and then for them to find out about their benefits, especially their education benefits."
When we referred to the phenomenon of Post Traumatic Stress Disorder Casillas weighed in on this very devastating condition:
"That's why we have San Antonio here, Laredo, Del Rio, The south Texas Veterans Health Care System and they're located at Audie Murphy Hospital or at Kerrville VA Hospital along with all the county veterans service officers that help with claims. We have a Texas Veterans Claims representative here that will help with claims of veterans who are helping with PTSD."
Elia Eliza Davila of the Valley Coastal Bend Healthcare System Laredo Outpatient Clinic also weighed in on the seriousness that is PTSD,
"I am a licensed clinical social worker at the Laredo Outpatient Veterans Clinic. Since 2011, we separated from the South Texas VA Healthcare System, now we're the Texas Valley Coastal Bend Healthcare System which is the Laredo clinic, Harlingen, McAllen, Corpus Christi clinic. The thing about Eagle Pass patients, is that they belong to our sector, so my job is that I work with our mental health team. The veterans that might be suffering with PTSD may be going through some suicidality, they might have issue with traumatic brain injury, we can provide them services. Initially they might have to see us in our main office in Laredo for initial intake, but then depending on their situation and their diagnosis we can often refer them to one of our video teleconferences and specialists. We have two psychologists, Dr. Megan Van Lipton and Dr. Jeremy Henn that do psychotherapy which is not necessarily a support group, but psychotherapy based on cognitive behavioral theory, we do cognitive processing therapy, we do prolonged exposure for PTSD. We have Dr. Mattew Jeffries who's a psychiatrist based in San Antonio, but they treat the veterans of Laredo. So we have set up with the Camino Real MHMR. They have a special designated room for the veterans of Eagle Pass so they don't have to travel to Laredo for their appointment."
On how they found out about this event:
"Through Mr. Abel Flores who is our administrative officer at the Laredo VA clinic who asked for volunteers, so today we have regular medical care representatives, we have women's health representative, we have the medical advisor whose name is David Wulwick and any veteran who hasn't enrolled in healthcare services would go to him first to get enrolled.
