According to Assistant Chief Sonny Mello, several units were called out into the area which began at about 3:00 PM to battle the blaze which was fueled by some high winds in the area.
"We had several brush trucks surrounding the area and we created a plan of attack. One of the first things was to make sure residents were protected and we made a perimeter and started fighting that fire within that perimeter," stated Mello, "We also had some heavy equipment and some water tankers from the Kickapoo Tribe assisting us, so it took a good four hours, but once we got it under control we started putting out some spot fires and returning some of the units back into service."
Fortunately according to Mello, there were no material damages that were reported other than the abandoned shed on the property of one of the ranches.
Other agencies who assisted were the Tribal Police, Sheriff's Department helped out with traffic control and the Kickapoo Maintenance Department also assisted with motor graters and heavy equipment which created a fire break which helped the EPFD to contain the fire to a certain area and keep a perimeter all the way around the blaze.
