"We've come this far. At this point it's costing us $10-15,000.00, but we'll testify again if we have to."
However the issue at hand was the discussion and possible action on presentation and acceptance of March 2014 Monthly Report from Maverick County Auditor's Office which always seems to get the interest of the commissioners.
"The comment I made was that the report was held up to the very end because we had not gotten information in relation to a deposit that was made on the detention center," said County Auditor Fidencio Ortiz, "We didn't record it in the books, in fact an hour before the meeting, we received bank statements. In those bank statements they show how much they got and it also shows that the trustees (Bond holders of the facility) paid themselves from there. So that's what we were waiting for to record the financial records from there."
When asked what the monthly installment is for the trustees, we were informed they paid themselves $312,000.00 for the month of January.
One of the questions that arose was the funds remaining in each commissioner's monthly budget allocation for street repairs through the Road & Bridge Department.
"Our office negotiated with contractors, the asphalt companies who agreed to do the work provided we pay for certain items, so through these negotiations, that's how streets get repaired. One of the things was that papers were not signed until April, so they were not posted to the financial records in March, they're going to be posted in April, so what we presented last night was exactly what appears on the financial reports and we're not going to change the financial reports."
"The only thing I mention to the public is that it's very important that we work to gether, that I get the information that I'm supposed to get in order to make the decisions to help our community. If this continues to happen on a monthly basis, we will have to bring it to the attention of the District Judge."
Saucedo made reference to budget amendments that can be made in order to address some of the more pressing issues that the commissioners face in light of a recent report made by an independent auditor.
The judge stated that he had set aside funds for each precinct for capital outlay which he said could be moved and used by them to address some of these needs.
"It's a forewarning, we have an auditor saying the commissioner does have money and his assistant saying the opposite,so as a budget officer, who am I supposed to believe. He made the statement that he needed information from the sheriff, but the information he needed was from January, not from March. All I'm asking is for him to get in his reports on time."
The item was tabled until next week in order for the commissioner's to have adequate time to review the report prior to approval.
The approval of the Treasurer's Report was accepted unanimously without much fanfare prior to the voting on the Dos Republicas issue.
