"We have our Parent Center Committee here at the lake, we organized a fund raiser and all proceeds from this fund raiser will be used to purchase shoes for the children of migrant families. As you know some of our families have very low income and sometimes don't have the money to make these types of expenses so we're helping some of them in this way," stated Lopez, "The parents have taken the initiative of doing this in order to help all the children that we have in the Seco Mines teaching and mentoring community."
He advised us of the fact that families from Eagle Pass have been doing so for close to 45 years as they depart for the northern states traditionally in March, April or May. Some wait for children to graduate before leaving for five months.
"We are very appreciative of the migrant community simply because they contribute to our economy. This is something that a lot of us do not see that these people bring their dollars back to Eagle Pass by paying taxes, purchasing new vehicles which they will utilize the next year to migrate back. They also use their money to add rooms to their homes here even providing jobs."
This is definitely beneficial to Eagle Pass and Maverick County, but let us not overlook the good that they do for the entire nation in helping to harvest the food we eat every day and taking on jobs that according to farmers and ranchers across the country, other people in their areas are incapable of doing which is a testament to the fortitude, diligence and will to sacrifice for their families that our people have exemplified for decades, the people that the great Cesar Chavez would fight for in his time.
