In what will be a first of its kind event, the City of Piedras Negras and the City of Eagle Pass will be holding a 'Closest to the Pin' contest on Saturday to find the best golfer on either side of the Rio Bravo.  Three shots from the giant flagpole in our neighboring Piedras Negras' Macro Plaza to a hole located approximately 200 yards across the river at Shelby Park will determine the historic first winner of this contest.

If one drives or walks across International Bridge I, a giant bull's eye with a perfectly placed hole in the center along with its flag can be seen from the distance.  This will mark the target for at least 30 golfers from both sides of the border.

According to Mayor Ramsey English-Cantú, the contest will be yet another event that unites our two cities, countries and cultures, "We are very excited to have this event in conjunction with the Masonic Lodge in Piedras Negras who are represented by Jorge Aguilar and Ruben Mendoza where citizens from both communities can come together to determine who the best golfer in this area is."

"We want to stress that this contest is from one country to another, there has never been a contest of this nature in any part of the world. Tiger Woods hit a symbolic shot from Asia to Europe in 2013," said Aguilar, "This is a contest between two countries which will strengthen the bonds between our two nations."

Their Jornada Juarista 2014 in honor to founding father Benito Juarez, has included intellectual competitions such as oratory, chess, a race, a debate and the idea of this event.

"On behalf of the Chamber of Commerce we are very glad to have this event which will put us on the map once again and with the help of the mass media we can bring that attention to our border," said Sandra Martinez, "It is a unique event which will help those groups who are researching this dreaded disease."

Cancer survivor Eloisa Rodriguez and Isamari Villarreal a member of the local organization Candles for Life were on hand to lend validity to this conference and this first-time event.

The GAC (Grupo de Apoyo para persona con Cancer) will also benefit from the proceeds of this event.

The entry fee for this contest will be $50.00 per participant and all proceeds will go to fight cancer.  Registration forms can be picked up at City Hall or you can call 773-1111.
