Editorial: City not enforcing codes
The City of Eagle Pass creates codes with the idea of enforcing them and the regulations of our city's bylaws. It has been a while since the city council approved an ordinance in order to have better control of yard sales or garage sales. According to the rules of the city, any resident can have a yard sale up to four (4) times in a year and as citizens they need to do their part to obtain this permit.
The permit does not cost a penny, but it must be obtained and placed in a visible location for code enforcement officers can see if the homeowner has permission to have the sale. However, for the most part, these sales are undertaken without any controls or permission such as on Bibb Street where there are homes who seemingly have these types of sales every two weeks on a regular basis.
Another ordinance is to keep your lawns and properties free of trash and other items which may cause the spread of pests such as rats, mice or mosquitoes. According to this ordinance, if the property owner fails to do so, the city will clean the property and the owner will be held liable for these costs. In some cases, you can drive by some of these lots and neither the property owner or the city are enforcing these ordinances.
