County Commissioner of Precinct 4 Roberto Ruiz, announced that Commissioner's Court has been discussing the possibility of raising the fee to funeral services performed on weekends in the county cemetery.
He said this in order to be able to cover the staff salaries of Maverick County, who are called upon to perform these tasks.
Ruiz further added that Commissioner's Court has explored the possibility of opening a new cemetery, as the current one has few plots left. The commissioner has mentioned in the past that there is land available for a future Maverick County Cemetery, however he feels it is not an endeavor the county should pursue at this time.
Commissioner's Court, the Road & Bridge Department and new County Planner April Rodriguez have even considered exhuming the remains of current plots if family members wish to be buried there, however there are regulations and time frames on if and when this could be done.
Ruiz said the county cemetery is the oldest in our city and the space is quickly being exhausted.
"We should consider closing the existing cemetery and take no more burials," said Ruiz, "Maintenance will continue and of course if people have already purchased plots, they will be honored of course."
