An atrocious hit and run incident resulted in the immediate death of a man who was returning home from a church retreat in the Pueblo Nuevo sector of Maverick County late into the evening on Wednesday.
47 year-old Robert Lee Herrera was killed instantly when an as of yet unidentified vehicular assailant hit the man causing mortal injuries to the man who had just left a church retreat and was walking home on FM 2030.
One witness, a woman who had just left the New Life Church in Pueblo Nuevo witnessed the horrific crime scene and was unable to pass due to the heavy presence of law enforcement and returned to the church to inform the congregation of what had occurred visibly moved by what she had seen.
Another member of the church informed The News Gram that the man had left the Wednesday service after prayer, bid the pastor farewell and proceeded to walk home.
One detail noticed by the witness is that there is minimal to no street lighting in the area the man was hit.
According to a press release from the Maverick County Sheriff's Department, deputies were dispatched to FM 2030 in reference to a motor vehicle accident involving a pedestrian.
Upon arrival, deputies discovered a male subject laying motionless on the street. EMS was summoned to the scene and determined male subject was deceased. Justice of the Peace Dora Madera pronounced the subject dead at 9:18 PM.
This case remains under investigation.
