EP proclaims Earned Income Credit Awareness Day

Juan M. Carrizales, Senior Tax Consultant with the IRS was on hand on Wednesday at the IBC Conference room to inform the community of the VITA Program which is a program designed to assist local residents with their income tax returns out of the Texas Workforce Center. He wanted to stress his appreciation for the City of Eagle Pass including IBC of Eagle Pass, Mexican Consulate Ismael Naveja Macias and his assistant Wendy M. Garcia Serrano, Councilwoman Gloria Hernandez, Mayor Ramsey English-Cantú, Mary Velasquez new Directress of the Eagle Pass Housing Authority, Sandra García and Erika Rodriguez who assisted in the preparation of the proclamation which was read on this day by the Councilwoman Gloria Hernandez representing Mayor Ramsey Cantu who was unable to attend. He also mentioned the earned income tax credit, the largest of its kind for working Americans that 20-25% of taxpayers fail to request come tax time. A family of five with three children, the maximum earned income tax credit is $6,044.00. 60% of all earned income tax credit claims come in the month of February and 20-25% of citizens may not be aware of it. The earned income tax credit is for people who work and have low to moderate income. There are more than 12,000 free tax preparation sites available and over 4,000 of them are volunteer income tax preparation sites that are provided to people who make $60,000.00 a year or less. Mayor Cantú named January 29, 2014 Earned Income Credit Awareness Day in Eagle Pass in a proclamation that was presented Wednesday morning.
