"The first thing I want to say is that we are really, really proud of you guys," said the congressman as the La Pryor High School Gymnasium with its immaculately waxed basketball floors and well-behaved student body as the thirty or so players watched on in pride, "My district stretches from the Valley to El Paso and let me tell you there weren't many schools that went as far as you did. It was an incredibly significant thing. Another thing that in our society, we tend to root for the underdog and you guys surprised a lot of people. The underdog has so much potential and so much ability."
"I want you to know that you have made a big impact on the entire community. Some of you are seniors and you will relish this moment for the rest of your lives and some of you will never play the game of football again," Gallego added, "Remember the moment and savor the moment, remember how good you felt because success is a really cool thing. You all had this success because of hard work (Con trabajo) that's what it's gonna take to succeed in life. Your success comes with a lot of responsibility to the people you see around you because when you d well, we all do well."
"The kids stepped up. We had a good group of senior who led our team, learned the offensive and defensive skills and special teams that we wanted to run," said Head Football Coach Justin Stephens, "We run a Split-Back Veer with two running backs. We had two backs that went for over 1,000 yards one of whom is a senior. Chris Gonzalez rushed for 1,270 yards this season and one sophomore, Ben Bliss who returns next season for us also rushed for over 1,000 yards."
When asked about his coaching staff Stephens mentioned that two of his coaches were already on board when he arrived as this is his first season on board at the helm of the Bulldog program, "Dean Carr is my Defensive Coordinator, Carlos Buentello is my Offensive Coordinator, Frank Gonzalez is our Special Teams Coordinator, Nick Lopez was our Secondary/Wide Receivers Coach," said the Bulldogs' man in charge, "When we got into district we got on a pretty good roll and our fans were real excited about football season, a real good home experience for our players."
