According to Maverick County Sheriff, Tom Schmerber, the gunshot victim was identified as Juan Sanchez. Sanchez was hit by a .38 caliber bullet in the chest. There was an exit path, but according to Schmerber, the bullet had not damaged any vital organs, and Sanchez had not sustained any life-threatening injuries. According to the report, Sanchez was at his home along with his father and uncle, celebrating Christmas Eve, when members of another family arrived and a fight broke out. The report indicates that all three members of the Sanchez family were attacked. Juan Sanchez, 33, received the gunshot, while his father, 51, and brother, 22, were beaten with baseball bats receiving head lacerations and contusions and were taken to the emergency room at Fort Duncan Regional Medical Center. The incident stems from an argument at a local dance club a few days earlier which was taken to the scene of the crime on Christmas eve at approximately 11:00 PM at 142 Mesquite. Sheriff Schmerber who spent most of his Christmas evening checking in on areas in and around the chula Vista, Las Quintas, La Herradura and as far as El Indio stated that he will be interviewing the suspect and a witness on Thursday afternoon to determine culpability, however the results of this investigation were not available at press time.
