A large amount of law enforcement officers in attendance along with city officials, department heads, city employees were all on time and eagerly awaiting the official announcement of the new Chief of Police for the Eagle Pass Police Department. The process which took approximately one month after opening the position, screening applicants and the conducting of interviews culminated Friday morning when City Manager Gloria Barrientos took the podium at City Hall to announce the hiring of Detective Albert Guajardo as the new man who will move forward as the head of the department.

"I would like to thank the members of City Council who are all here to witness this event along with the committee of Councilman Rudy Villalpando, Fire Chief Jesus Rodriguez, Municipal Court Judge Francisco Martinez, Mayor Ramsey English-Cantú who assisted me in this process," stated Barrientos, "We are also very thankful to Chief Bruce Mills and Chief Sam Granato for their assistance in this transition. I am proud to call on new Chief of Police Alberto Guajardo." "I want to thank the City of Eagle Pass, the City Council as well as the hiring committee for this opportunity. There have been many changes in the last seven months where we saw two honorable persons come to Eagle Pass get us moving in the right direction. As I told the interviewing committee, I promise to continue with many changes," stated Guajardo in his first opportunity to address the public, "I will continue moving forward, not looking back as I saw our police department as a satellite from our administration. I will bring up this department as a part of the City. Together we can do so much." Guajardo also went on to mention that he will meet with Mills and Granato to find out the key issues further saying that there will be change on a positive note to drive the Eagle Pass Police Department where it needs to be. "I am happily exhausted," he added, "As I received about 50 phone calls until my battery died out, but this is a 24 hour a day job, not a Monday through Friday job and I will stay on my toes to provide the best security for our citizens. We have a fine cadre of officers and we need to keep reminding them that they have been doing a very good job. Thank you very much." The Honorable Mayor Ramsey English-Cantú addressed the gathering by saying, "I want to thank the committee for their professionalism and I also want to thank Mrs. Barrientos for her leadership as we continue to work together. I know that this is a new venture in your life, Chief, it will be a great challenge."
