MCHD highlighted at Community Breakfast

Claudia Wright was the emcee at this month's Community Breakfast and she graciously introduced Mike Garcia who led the gathering in prayer as he asked The Almighty to prevent our citizens from getting cancer, help those who have it cope with it and provide help to those families who are dealing with the disease. Garcia's employees who were present all proudly wore pink shirts in support of Breast Cancer Awareness Month. With this in mind, the Chamber of Commerce had a presentation by the Maverick County Hospital District who took advantage of having the podium to highlight several of their most beneficial programs which are available at district offices located at 3406 Bob Rogers Drive behind the Fort Duncan Regional Medical Center.

William Worrell, Program Director for the Ryan White Program stated the main purpose of the program which is to provide community outreach and prevention as well as to test for HIV and AIDS. They try to provide a link to pharmaceuticals and to prevent the spread of HIV and AIDS. "If you know anyone who is sexually active who you think can benefit from testing, you can contact us at 757-4937." Monica Nandin, Clinic Manager for the Physician Specialty Group, mentioned that the Oncology Center which is open on Thursdays and Fridays is currently serving 15 clients and also reminded the public of the many different specialists who are now on board at the MCHD. They now count with two surgeons, rheumatology, neurology, cardiology, three oncologists, an orthopedic surgeon and an endocrinologist all specialists in their fields. Mary Hughes is the BCCS Coordinator who says they want to reduce mortality of breast cancer and cervical cancer patients and offer an array of services including mammograms, pap smears, ultra sound, biopsies and also have the luxury of an in house oncology department. Catherine Vidal spoke on financial assistance services provided, referrals for the indigent program they provide two tiers of assistance 0-21% in Tier 1 and 22-100% on Tier 2 and have 900 active clients. In response to the Affordable Care Act, they have become certified as mentioned in a recent interview with CEO Elcira Bares and have a certified counselor and certified case workers to assist you at 757-4900. Finally Sister Ursula who assists patients with the awareness of diabetes complication prevention, mentioned that one must have a physician's referral, but can also come without one and they can help you with that process there, just call 757-4395. She concluded, "We're here to help them deal with the disease and avoid the complications, educate our citizens and to make our community that much healthier."
