A.D. Ibarra -Eagle Pass he Eagle Pass News Gram was able to have a highly informative conversation with EPPD Chief Sam Granato on Wednesday who graciously informed us of several initiatives being implemented on the force including the new hand-held ticket writing devices which according to Irma Morales have been simplifying their work as well as have been significantly increasing the number of infractions being presented to Municipal Court.

ranato stated that the wishes of City Council are for all officers on patrol to have one as well as parking meter officers and even code enforcement officers.

Their goal it seems is to go paperless in the very near future. When asked if this was feasible at this time Granato said that they are looking into the possibility of using funds from Municipal Court to purchase those lacking as they only have eight at this time and there are 16 officers in any given shift, "It really makes record keeping a lot better and helps us to complete our state mandated racial profiling report as it will effectively formulate it for us. It assists in searches, it checks all those things out when we have to do this report, it spits all this information out and assists us in tabulating the report. Before, it had to be manually tabulated." Another thing the chief mentioned was the fact that things have been relatively quiet in terms of major crime, and even though they received some positive comments from Councilman Luis Sifuentes, many of the positive issues do not see the light of day such as the audit which is being conducted by ML Reardon & Associates, a $27,000.00 contract nearing completion on the 31st of September or the 1st of October. "Thus far they've removed all the marijuana which we had here which has been moved to CONNEX and is ready to burn," said the chief, "2,000 Lbs. were already incinerated with more to be disposed of in Weslaco." Another interesting find was a 1918 Silver Colt .38 caliber pistol with Mother of Pearl inlays and four very prominent gold inlays on either sides of the handle and if you look back in history, two symbols which at one point may have gone hand in hand: the symbol of the government of Mexico and the symbol of the German Nazi Party which at the time of the production of this firearm was a respected symbol as we are talking about at leas 20 years prior to the atrocities of WW II. "Many people may not know there was a Neo-Nazi movement in Mexico which was subsequently outlawed in 1939, a year before the assassination of Leon Trotsky whose assassination was ordered by Stalin. Who knows, with an authentic assessment of the value of this weapon, we may even be able to pay for the audit and have money left to spare according to the historic nature of the weapon." They have contacted Colt and are attempting to ascertain the sale of the weapon as it was either sold to the Mexican or German government, because the serial number shows it was not made for individual sale. The chief closed our interview by informing us that he had a sit down meeting with the police chief of our neighboring city of Piedras Negras Jose Antonio Campa Arredondo, Maverick County Sheriff Tom Schmerber and himself which he says was highly beneficial as they now have a direct line of communication with Mexican authorities and have established a partnership which may be beneficial in light of recent incidents such as the disappearance of a local man, two young girls and a fugitive running from the law in Mexico who was recently apprehended in Uvalde.
