The faces of those being rescued showed the grief and terror that nature's most powerful force can cause you to feel when one is overwhelmed by it, but thanks to the Texas Department of Public Safety, the US Border Patrol and the two aforementioned agencies along with the numerous volunteers, what Chief Jesus Rodriguez called 'Neighbors helping neighbors,' miraculously, there was no loss of life in this tragedy.
Maverick County Judge David Saucedo, Commissioners Robert Ruiz and Gerardo Morales and Treasurer Rito Valdez III were on hand to also express their gratitude for the entities who came together on June 14th and 15th during the heavy rains that fell upon our community.
"We want to recognize these entities who were truly the first responders to this disaster," stated Ruiz.
"We still have a tough road ahead of us, we still have a lot of work to do, the Mayor of the City of Eagle Pass and myself have been working with our state representatives and federal officials who have all been working diligently to try to get services out to our community. In some instances we've been successful and in others we have not," said The Honorable David R. Saucedo, Maverick County Judge, "I think it very prudent that sometimes we tend to think of our DPS in a very different aspect, but in this case they along with USBP, EPFD, MCSO, EPPD, Texas Parks and Wildlife were there to help save lives and for this we are very grateful. It was amazing to see so many agencies come together so fast and that in a large part was due to the work of Chief Rodriguez, who we consider to a part of our team."
"As Emergency Management Coordinator our number one priority is to save lives and I couldn't be more thankful, and I think it is important to acknowledge that it was not just the agencies, it was neighbors helping neighbors," stated Chief Rodriguez, "It was so widespread that I can hardly count the instances where people selflessly helped each other. Thank you again very much, the words 'Thank you' don't express the gratitude I have towards all the agencies involved, we had two rounds of that rain event, we know that when there is another event, we are as prepared as possible."
