Elon Musk, the world's most richest person on Thursday, September 28, 2023, visited Eagle Pass, TX to meet with authorities including Congressman Tony Gonzales, Mayor Rolando Salinas, City Manager Ivan Morua, Border Patrol agents, TX Department of Public Safety, Eagle Pass Police and County Sheriff Department at the epicenter of the ongoing surge of Venezuelan refugees.
During his visit, Musk said that he himself is a migrant from South Africa who at the age of 17 moved to Canada to attend Queen's University and evade military service in South Africa.
Musk got his Canadian citizenship the same year, partly because he thought it would be easier to get American citizenship that way. Musk moved to the United States in 1992 to study business and physics at the University of Pennsylvania. He immigrated to the country the legal way.
He added that he is pro immigration as long as it's done correctly. "As an immigrant to the United States I'm extremely pro immigrant. I believe we need to greatly expand the immigration system.
And we should let anyone in the country who is hard working and honest and that will be a contributor to the United States. We should have expedited legal approval for anyone that falls under that category.
By the same token, we should not be allowing anyone into the country who is breaking the law," said Musk. " That doesn't make sense.
The law is there for you a reason. We want to to both things including smoothing out legal immigration and stopping the flow of people that is of such magnitude that it's leading to a collapse of our social services system." Musk stated that he wanted to have a first hand view of the problem occuring along the border and hear it from authorities and locals in areas such as Eagle Pass that has had growing issues this past few weeks.
Authorities provided Musk a tour of the area under Port of Entry No 2 where a makeshift encampment and receiving area has been set up.From that area, migrants are the transferred to the Soft Sided Facility along Northern Maverick County.
