State Representative for House District 74 Heriberto “Eddie” Morales on Wednesday visited the epicenter for Eagle Pass's undocumented migrant surge and problem, Port of Entry No. 2.
During his visit, Morales called on the State and Federal Government to take appropriate action related to the problems faced at the border."For the past three years, I have been insisting our communities are going to hit an impasse as it relates to the migrant crisis," said Morales. "Today, the City of Eagle Pass declared a State of Emergency to detail the necessity of action from our federal government.
I know many of you are tired of this. I am tired of this too.
Our communities have been at the forefront of this crisis and we have been resilient and supportive of the measures taken by the State of Texas.
But right now, we are only seeing the situation get worse.""As you may have seen this past weekend, thousands of migrants were apprehended in Eagle Pass, alone.
This is not sustainable. Now, I want to be clear: we have spent, as a state, over $9.5 billion to address this crisis.
Not funds from the federal government, but from the Texas taxpayer. We have heard in the media and from constituents that Operation Lone Star is not working.
While the situation is getting worse, without the funds that were allocated, I fully believe an emergency declaration would have been issued sooner out of necessity.
To be transparent with you, I am thankful for our work in passing Operation Lone Star, because, at the end of the day, without it our law enforcement and municipal governments would have gone bankrupt trying to foot the bill.
As many of you know, I'm not a fan of partisan politics.
And this issue isn't going to be solved by one side of the aisle either ignoring the other or casting the other as a demagogue. We need bipartisan solutions.
While our views may not always be aligned, I respect Congressman Tony Gonzales, strongly support his endeavor in putting forward meaningful solutions at the federal level.
His Hire Act is a comprehensive and multifaceted federal solution that I strongly implore the U.S. House of Representatives take up for a vote.
Nothing will get done and nothing will change for us without the federal government's assistance on this issue.
And Texas taxpayers can't continue footing the bill for their neglect. However, with the likelihood being nothing continues to be done at the federal level, Texas cannot, and will not stop in trying to protect our communities.
I have put forward a bipartisan state-level proposal called the Tx.
Secure our Border Migrant Processing and Jobs Plan that would work to invest in our border infrastructure, deter migrants from crossing the Rio Grande, and provide a path for those who qualify for asylum, a path to work in Texas and contribute to this great state," added Morales."I implore Governor Abbott to sit down at the table with border representatives and senators so we can produce something meaningful for our communities.
The constant back and forth, unilateral action, and uncertainty is not productive and inflicting lasting damage to working relationships with our biggest trading partner. Lets come to the table.
Lets get something done. Enough is enough. Texans expect more from their elected leaders in Austin," concluded Morales.
