Texas Rangers are investigating an incident which occurred on Thursday at midnight in the parking lot of the Exxon station in the Seco Mines sector of the city where police officers opened fire on a vehicle being driven by a young man who hit two officers when attempting to flee from police.

Lieutenant Aldo Escamilla informed The News Gram that by recommendation of the District Attorney, the Texas Rangers will proceed to handle the case.

Police reports indicate that officers did draw their weapons and opened fire on the Chevy Suburban driven by Javier Rivas, 18, who was not injured as the shots hit windows and the driver-side door.

Chief of Police Antonio Castañeda stated that the reaction by the officers was justified as their life was placed in danger.

According to the report, the youth arrived at the McDonald's restaurant and was causing a disturbance, but when he saw the police arriving he jumped in his vehicle and fled and in the process, crashed into a police car, hit two officers with his door, was shot at and later caused an accident on Main Street.

Lieutenant Escamilla said that charges will be filed for the damage to the patrol unit, but harsher penalties will be forthcoming for assaulting the two officers with his vehicle.
