City to Recognize Kickapoo Tribe for Native American Heritage Month

The City of Eagle Pass and Public Library will be holding a Native American Heritage Month Proclamation Ceremony in recognition of the Kickapoo Traditional Tribe of Texas this Thursday, November 18th at the Eagle Pass Public Library at 6:00 pm.

The community is invited to attend as we celebrate National Native American Heritage month.

The month of November is recognized as Native American Heritage Month. It’s during this time that the U.S. pays tribute to the rich culture, ancestry and traditions of Native Americans.

Locally we are blessed to have such traditions and heritage as the Kickapoo tribe is an integral part of our community.

It's important to recognize the efforts of the tribe and the heritage that they all play within our community. Their strong efforts and the strides that they have taken, to come a long way from the early days of living underneath  bridge No. 1 by the banks of the Rio Grande river to being the top leading economic factor and development opportunities that our community has had. They are a great part of this area’s success.

The Kickapoo back in the early 80’s were consistently struggling to save their culture, but at the same time, fighting poverty, poor health, illiteracy and the fear of being forced off city owned land under what is now known as International Bridge 1.

35 years later and we see the Kickapoo Traditional Tribe of Texas in a new light. No more do we see the wikiups, poverty, illiteracy and charity by the city to sustain them.

The Kickapoo Traditional Tribe of Texas now own and operate a Casino on the trust land which has further expanded to include a school, administration offices and medical clinic.

The Kickapoo with their casino, hotel and administration are the largest employers in Maverick County.

The Kickapoo are now integrated into the school system and have pushed forward the idea of educating their young and sending them to college, using immersion of Kickapoo language and teaching of traditions on a yearly basis, from the Warrior Dances to Winter Homes.

In a small but powerful corner of Maverick County the Kickapoo showed many of this area that without their investments into, and strong presence that was forged that day in December 16, 1985, when they were entrusted with the land they now own, the Kickapoo would not be the greatest source of tourism and uptick in merchants in Maverick County.
