The well-known veterinarian Gerardo Chapa was taken to San Antonio after having been shot twice on Thursday afternoon in Piedras Negras.
The Maverick County Sheriff's Department reported that the 46 year-old veterinarian drove his pickup truck to the United States side of International Bridge II seeking aid as he had been shot by stray gunfire on the Mexican side of the border.
He was taken to Fort Duncan Regional Medical Center where he received first aid for his wounds and was then sent to San Antonio for specialized treatment.
Although he did not sustain life threatening wounds, he would need surgical intervention as one gunshot grazed his hand and the other was in his back.
Since the incident occurred on the other side of the border, it is not known how or why he was shot and may not be known for some time.
