September is Childhood Obesity Awareness Month and the Maverick County Hospital District through its Diabetes Self Management Program are raising awareness to a problem that we as a community have, Childhood obesity.

Childhood Obesity is a major problem across the entire nation with reports stating that one in three children in the U.S. are overweight or obese. This can bring many health problems including the development of Diabetes.

Childhood obesity puts children at risk for health-related problems that were once seen only in adults such as type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, and heart disease.

MCHD’s Registered Dietitian Nutritionist Manrique Fuentes – LD, and staff are ready to assist the community and help patients take charge of their individual health, wellness, and care.

MCHD is focused on prevention by pushing healthier eating and exercise and setting sound strategies for preventing childhood obesity.

Locally, Obesity is a prevalent issue that affects too many people including many children.

According to the Child Policy Research Center. Maverick County has a population risk factor of approximately 28% in childhood obesity.

If you are the parent of an overweight or obese child please consult with your family physician or call MCHD to set up an appointment to begin a sound strategy to help your child.

For an appointment with Mr. Fuentes please call 830-757-4900.
