The Maverick County Sheriff's Department donated a van to the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 8562.

Maverick County Sheriff Tom Schmerber presented the Maverick County Commissioners Court with a request to consider the donation of the transportation van during a meeting held on Monday,  February 8, 2021.

Sheriff Schmerber explained that the van was used to transport inmates and is no longer in service as the County has purchased newer vehicles for this purpose.

Maverick County Judge David Saucedo and the Maverick County Commissioners Court full-heartedly agreed that the donation was a great idea that would help out many local veterans.

VFW Post Commander Ricardo Chavarría thanked Maverick County officials for the gesture and donation.

The van will be used to take Veterans to doctor visits and other uses throughout the year.

Maverick County Commissioner Roberto Ruiz, a Veteran himself, thanked the Court and asked if it could be considered in the future to set aside funding to purchase a brand-new van to be used for the community Veterans and their transport needs.
