The Maverick County Commissioners Court announced the purchase and arrival of specialized freezers at the Emergency Operation Center in preparation to safely store the Covid-19 Vaccines that they will receive.

Currently, Maverick County and Eagle Pass Officials like so many others across the Nation are waiting on further notice from the Federal Government of how many vaccines will be eventually made available, and by when.
Up to now, nothing is set in stone as to when a mass distribution will be taking place.
Local residents have started inundating the local medical facilities looking for information as to when they can get the breakthrough vaccines that have been found to be highly effective in fighting the virus that has infected over 65.5 million and killed 1.5 million people worldwide.
Locally, 151 people have died from the Covid-19 Virus, and the number of infected continues to rise in a daily basis.
The freezers purchased assures that governing and health officials are ready to move on the vaccination process once it's made readily available to our region, specifically Maverick County.
The specialty freezer units are unlike any freezer since both the vaccines that could make their way into our community must be stored at temperatures below freezing.
The first two vaccines expected to receive emergency use authorization from the FDA are both mRNA vaccines, and these vaccines must be kept very cold.
For example the Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine must be stored at ultra-low freezing temperatures, about -100 degrees Fahrenheit. This temperature falls well below what's found in a standard freezer.  The Moderna Vaccine must be stored at around -22 degrees Fahrenheit.
Because the Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine requires an ultra-low freezing process, a wide scale distribution to the general public would be hard to achieve even if sufficient doses were available immediately.
Authorities do urge the community to continue protecting yourselves while we all wait for the vaccine, which will come.
