Diaz garnered 1,837 votes (58.19%) while Chisum received 1,320 (41.81%). At around 7:05 pm, election judge Arturo Delgado presented the early voting totals putting Diaz up by 402 votes.
Diaz had 1,532 votes going into the final day as compared to Chisum De La Garza’s 1,130 votes.
That accounted for a combined total of 2,662 votes cast during the early voting period.
Both side’s count had approximately between 480 and 500 votes cast on election day, Saturday.
At that point, with 402 votes down (the near impossible feat to take close to 95 percent of all those votes from behind), ended De La Garza's hopes of becoming the newest City County member.
Diaz and his supporters withstood the heavy rainfall as they patiently waited for Delgado to announce the inevitable and declare him the winner.
At around 8:10 pm Delgado came down the Maverick County Courthouse staircase and proceeded to announce the final totals. “There were a total of 3,157 votes with a total of 1,837 votes for Elias Diaz and Elizabeth Chisum De La Garza’s had 1,320 votes,” declared Delgado.
Diaz is scheduled to take office this Wednesday and will be replacing longtime City Official Rudy Villalpando.
Díaz thanked Chisum De La Garza for her competitive nature and participating in the Democratic process.
He also thanked his supporters, the voters, and community that he will represent.
