The Court held a meeting on Monday in which they approved as a formality a sound system, landscaping designs, and subsurface core samples for the structural design on the proposed project which is in the planning stages.

The companies that will be taking care of these tasks are subcontractors chosen by Gignac Architects who was hired by Maverick County on November 2019 to design the project.

At this point in time the county is assessing all variables to obtain an accurate picture of how much it could cost to build.

This assessment is necessary as the county will look to possibly seek a bond to be used for capital improvement projects which includes the Amphitheater and Tax Administrative Office Building on S. Veterans Blvd.

During the meeting, the items were met with some resistance from Pct. 4 County Commissioner Roberto Ruiz who in the past had voted in favor of moving forward with this project. “I'm not comfortable with, I'm sorry that nobody from that office was present to give us a rundown,” said Ruiz.

Judge David Saucedo explained that the items being approved were a formality as the Architect hired has the authority and right to subcontract work out and choose who they see fit to do the job required.

County Engineer Hector Canales explained that the architectural company currently has a travel ban due to the COVID-19 Pandemic. “We're only trying to keep this project going,” stated Canales. Judge Saucedo concurred with Engineer Canales and consulted with legal counsel Woody Wilson to see if everything was being handled correctly.

Wilson replied that it was being done correctly. “This is not the time to be throwing things around all of a sudden when you have been absent with the issue.

We are trying to get this thing moving,” explained Saucedo. The items were approved by the Commissioners Court with Commissioner Ruiz abstaining from the vote. Commissioner Ruiz questioned the Court as to the amount that was to be considered for the bond that would be looked at in the near future.

Attorney Wilson explained that the amount was to be set once design specifications on the proposed projects were structured.

The County has been seeking to build a 2,500 seat amphitheater at the County Lake that will help promote the arts and be a venue for live music, performances and other cultural events. County officials are hoping that the new additions will be of a great benefit to community residents and tourist.
