The early voting period will be taking place at the Eagle Pass Multi-Purpose Center located at 480 S. Monroe St. Voting will be taking place from Feb. 18-28, from 8:00 am to 5:00 pm. Candidates in the primary election are gearing up for what's expected to be a contentious election with all but one of the local races drawing multiple candidates.
Maverick County Sheriff Tom Schmerber did not draw an opponent for his re-election bid and is expected to serve his third term.
The most talked about race in this primary is for the House District 74 State Representative seat which has locals, Attorney Heriberto “Eddie” Morales and Former Eagle Pass Mayor Ramsey E.
Cantu looking to win the Democratic nomination. Rowland Garza from Del Rio is looking to throw a wrench into the race and win his bid to challenge in November.
The winner of the March Primary will then meet the Republican Party nominee in the month of November.
The District 19 State Senator race will also play host to several Democratic candidates who are looking to challenge incumbent Pete Flores in the month of November.
Locally, there are over 20 individuals who have signed up to run in several positions up for grabs.
Incumbent Maverick County Pct. 1 Commissioner Jerry Morales is looking to get re-elected for his 3rd term.
The primary election will be held on March 3, 2020. Polling sites for this day will be announced in the near future.
