An end to an era has come as the Eagle Pass City Council which includes Mayor Ramsey E. Cantu, City Councilmen Rudy Villalpando, and Luis Sifuentes had their last monthly meeting together on Tuesday, January 7, 2020.

Only one of these 3 individuals will be back to rejoin the existing City Council which includes Billy Davis and Yolanda Ramon, after the February 1st special election.

The three have been in public office together for the majority of their political careers, which has been overall productive and of benefit for the constituency.

Sifuentes has been in public office as a City Council member for approximately 11 years.

Villalpando has served as Eagle Pass City Council member for 16 years.

Mayor Cantu was first elected to the Eagle Pass City Council in 2006. He was then elected as Mayor in 2010, and has been serving the community since then.

During the past 10 years the City Council has made strides in setting forth a 7-year master plan which included a capital improvement and infrastructure projects unlike anything seen before in our community. The existing City Council began their work to improve the quality of life by aggressively tackling on projects such as the historic public library renovation which concluded in 2017.

The City Council also led a charge to invest into our community's parks, gymnasiums and hike and bike trails in an effort to enhance the quality of life.

They also moved forward and formed the City of Eagle Pass Business Economic Development Committee. Mayor Cantu, Councilmen Villalpando and Sifuentes were also instrumental in the planning and building of the City's Public Safety and Public Sports Complexes.

These two multi-million dollar projects will be of great benefit for the community and entire region.

The City Council as we know it, also worked closely with the Eagle Pass Water Works System to secure the EPWWS $53 million Water Expansion project which include the water pipe changes in the downtown area. Some of these pipes are over 100 years old.

Another important project was the EP Bridge System Lane Expansion. For the past 5 years, the City Council has been able to move forward with implementing so many beneficial projects all while being able to keep the Ad Valorem Tax Rate at the same average level.

They were even able to decrease the tax rate by a minimal amount for this year.

They have been able to secure the necessary funding through an increase in revenues coming from the city's bridge system.

Throughout their time serving the community the City Council, led by Mayor Cantu - although they have had their differences of opinions and share of criticism from the public - have worked hard to represent the entire community's best interest.

Mayor Cantu now moves forward and is fighting to be able to run for the House District 74 State Representative seat. His fate in the 2020 March Election Primary will be decided by a Federal Judge on Friday, January 10.

Luis Sifuentes and Rudy Villalpando are both vieing to become the next City Mayor.

Only one of them will return to city public office after the month of February.
