The City of Eagle Pass could be in the beginning stages of researching new parking meter systems in the downtown area.

The topic was brought up and discussed during the Eagle Pass City Council meeting held on Tuesday, December 4.

During the monthly departmental reports, the City Council held a discussion on the matter with Eagle Pass Police Chief Albert Guajardo and City Manager George Antuna.

City Councilwoman Yolanda Ramon asked about how the meter and parking situation in the downtown area was working and what plans are in place for the future.

"I've known that we have spoken about this before and how it would be expensive to fix them. Where are we with that?” asked Ramon.

"Yes, those are discussions that we are having right now with the City Manager.

The Meters that we do have right now are costly to repair.

So it is something that we need to take into consideration when determining our options,” said Chief Guajardo. "The meters are expensive to fix. Do we invest to fix the current system we have or do we upgrade the entire system we have downtown.”

The council and administration concurred that it be beneficial to begin a query on cost estimates for the meter project.

“Let's start looking at our options and see what's more cost effective,” added Ramon.

“I recommend going with the new. There is no sense in us investing resources into antiquated products that are going to be obsolete in 6 months,” said Antuna.

The City Council agreed to start researching the item to begin addressing the downtown meter issue.
