The 2020 candidate registration period is 3 days away, and a clear picture of who will be going up against whom is starting to take shape.
Several local candidates are already preparing and campaigning in what could be an interesting run to be the last one standing by the end of the March primaries.
Up to now, there are several elected officials who are registering to seek re-election.
Those elected officials include Maverick County Sheriff Tom Schmerber who might be running unopposed.
Another public official who has announced that he will seek his re-election is Maverick County Commissioner for Precinct 1 Jerry Morales.
Rumors have been rounding the local coffee shops that at least one individual is considering throwing his name into the fold and go up against a very strong Morales.
Another political race to keep an eye on is for the 293rd District Attorney seat.
Longtime DA Roberto Serna has made a strong statement that he doesn't plan to slow down in his fight against crime and is seeking re-election.
Serna will have to contend against a formidable opponent as Attorney Albert Rodriguez has been campaigning for the past month and is intent in taking Serna's longtime spot.
Appointed Maverick County Attorney Gloria Hernandez is believed to be seeking her election to the position she was named to by the Maverick County Commissioners Court.
Attorney Jaime Iracheta is rumored to be getting ready to contend for the Maverick County Attorney position after he was appointed to it and then replaced by Hernandez.
Another important position up for election is the Maverick County Commissioner of Precinct 3 seat held by Pete Venegas, Jr.
Venegas is already putting up political signs announcing his bid for a re-election. Olga Ramos is ready to contend and run against Venegas. Maverick County Tax Assessor-Collector Isamari Sanchez-Villarreal is more than likely going to seek re-election in the elected position she has held for numerous years.
Maverick County Constable Pct 3 AB Mario Hernandez is seeking re-election. No one is expected to sign up and run against Hernandez.
All other Constable positions are also up for election.
In Pct. 2 Jaime S. Rios is expected to seek re-election. Rios will be facing a tough fight in opponent Denise Cantu who is seeking to be the first ever elected female Maverick County Constable.
Pct. 4 Constable Jose Regalado is seeking re-election and is facing another peace officer during this electoral process. Hector “Big Rod” Rodriguez is looking to be elected to the position Regalado has held since 2012. Pct. 1 Constable Rudy Valdez is expected to seek reelection and is looking at facing two other candidates. Oscar Ramos has announced he is seeking the position.
Longtime peace officer Jose “Coche” Duran is also vying to take the position Valdez has held since 2012.
All interested candidates will be able to register their candidacy as of November 9, 2019.
