Texas State Senator for District 19, which includes Maverick County, Pete Flores held a town hall meeting in Eagle Pass on Wednesday, October 9 at the IBC Bank main branch offices.

Senator Flores was accompanied by many community members Including over 25 local students and Teacher Lucia Gonzalez from the Eagle Pass High School Advanced Placement U.S. Government and Politics class.

The students and community members present listened attentively as Senator Flores presented a 86th Legislative Session update. Flores would proceed to navigate through the legislative update and also explain to the young local students the inner workings of how government works.

Flores would end the town hall session by answering questions from the audience in attendance, including from several students.

“As a high school student it's scary to see all these mass shootings occurring. What are your thoughts on gun reform and what can be done to address this issues?” asked one EPHS student. "We have invested funding into Senate Bill 11 which is called school hardening, to make sure that our schools are secure and provide funds for security.

There are a lot of things we can do to control behavior, and to be able to recognize unormal behavior patterns. A lot of the money we invested into mental health has to do with being able to identify those individuals that show signs that need further inquiry and attention. And that they are not being ignored. As it pertains to Firearms, of course the Second Amendment (right to bear arms) in the constitution is a right. But we still have rules. But the infringement itself is a slippery slope. My position on that is, I grew up around firearms and it's a matter of looking at what the laws are as we have a lot of laws. It's already against the law to murder. It's already against the law to sell a firearm to a felon.

There are many laws in place that I believe are not being enforced.”

Flores addressed a recent shooting in Texas where the individual who did the shooting purchased a firearm even though he should not have had accessibility to it.

"Are we prosecuting the sellers to the full force of the law as we should? Not really, but we should. We should do things like that before we infringe on the second amendment. I'm a believer of the second amendment but I'm also a firm believer as a Peace Officer for most of my adult life that when you don't enforce the law, lawlessness is going to occur. We need to make sure that those that put us in danger, answer for it,” stated Flores. Flores emphasized that this very important issue is being looked at and that he knows that it will be discussed and acted with due diligence.
