Murals are important in that they bring art into the public sphere and create a tangible sense of place, destination, resulting in increased foot traffic while adding color, vibrancy, and character to the area where they have been created.

Such beautification projects also offer social, cultural, and economic benefits through an accessibility to art and creative expression without the cost and classbased barriers associated with museums and galleries, as well as architectural integration into the physical environment.

A group of local artists from the community and the Eagle Pass Main Street program started on one of many historical murals to be painted in the downtown area of the community on Tuesday, October 1.

The group included EPISD teachers Jerry Lopez, Diego Diaz and Adrian Ordaz, along with Carlos Herrera and Main St. Director Joe Cruz who began the first line drawings of an old downtown picture at the intersection of Main and Adams St at Cooters Bar.

The group will begin painting the mural in the following days and will also be bringing in several art students to help out in this beautification project. Main Street Director Joe

Cruz states that this mural is only the beginning of many to come which will all depict Downtown Main St. and its historical buildings as they were in the past.
