For approximately 2 years the horrid case of animal cruelty was in the hands of officials who really never moved to find justice for a puppy named Julius. Recently, the Buddy Foundation, who along with Maverick County Sheriff Tom Schmerber and his Department rescued Julius from his owner's backyard, reported on the status of this animal cruelty case. “Julius died a horrible death exactly 2 years ago. He lived an even worse life at the hands of a cruel family in Maverick County,” wrote the foundation. "Julius, today the world failed you miserably.
We have found out that the case was dismissed since May 28 with a small fine and no real consequences. All these people that signed the dismissal documents failed you. The people that sat on your case for two whole years while looking us in the eyes and lying to us failed you.”
Julius suffered greatly at the hands of his abuser.
When he was rescued he was completely infected with mange, open wounds and severely malnourished. His rescuers attempted to save his life but sadly he passed away a week later.
Since then the case had been pending and the foundation reported that it was scheduled to go to court on April, but was taken off the docket to be rescheduled for another date.
The Buddy Foundation added that the date never came as the criminal case was dismissed unbeknownst to them in May.
“We paid many visits to our county attorneys over the past two years begging for justice. Each time we were met with empty promises and it was obvious that we were being taken for fools. We met with A.J. Iracheta who was
county attorney at the time on several occasions. He left his post one and a half year from the time we filed this case and nothing was ever done. We then met with now County Attorney Gloria Hernandez (sworn in on March 26) earlier this year hoping for some kind of resolution.
This case was scheduled to go to court in April of this year, but we then heard it had been pulled from the docket. We’ve been asking for updates ever since to no avail. Today, we found out that the case was dismissed since May 28th with a small fine and no real consequences.
How can this case not scream ANIMAL CRUELTY?!!!” wrote the Buddy Foundation. “Shame on all those that have the power to be their voice and continue to give free passes to these heartless monsters that abuse animals every day in our community.”
The Foundation alleges the case was closed by a recently dismissed Assistant County Attorney without the foundation being notified of what was occurring.
