Another group of white crosses with the words John Doe inscribed on them have been resurrected at the Maverick County Cemetery.

This deceased individuals remain unidentified and unclaimed.

This year there have been approximately 23 undocumented immigrants who have lost their lives attempting to cross illegally into the United States.

How many of those individuals are now buried in the County cemetery pauper burial area is unclear.

But officials who work closely in handling this cases say that the majority of them are in fact undocumented immigrants who are never identified and claimed by their families.

What is known is that back in 2017 there were 11 unmarked pauper burial plots in the Maverick County Cemetery which are believed to all be undocumented people who remain nameless and unclaimed. Another six individuals remains were buried last week which all carried the name John Doe to their grave.

An individual tagged as a pauper is usually buried within a month of death and discovery.

If the individual is believed to be undocumented the time of wait will often depend on the Mexican Consulates Office while they attempt to identify the person and notify family members.

The Mexican Consulates Office in Eagle Pass works tirelessly to identify the remains of these individuals.

Who buries these unclaimed and unidentified individuals? Maverick County is in fact responsible and has a designated area at the County cemetery for pauper burials.

Sometimes identifying them takes years and often times they remain unidentified and become another statistic that increases on a yearly basis of people perishing in the search for the American dream.
