Although it's unclear if such testing would be specifically for students in extra-curricular activities or as random testing in general, the EPISD Board is slated to discuss the matter and consult with their attorney and could bring up an action item in the near future.
Currently, the School District has policies in place and defined in the EPISD Students Handbook which strictly prohibits such activity anywhere near a School District campus or property.
The District's current policy includes under employee welfare; “EPISD shall maintain a drug-free environment and shall establish, as needed, a program complying with federal and state requirements; Alcohol and Drug Abuse Prevention Policy; Smoking and/or tobacco use are prohibited within any school building or property, Under no circumstances shall tobacco be used within District buildings, in District vehicles, or in the presence of students at school or school-related activities.”
Recently, Bushland - a School District in Texas - announced that they would be randomly drug testing students who participate in extracurricular activities or request a permit to park a vehicle on school property.
The Bushland District has said that implementing the testing will help create an illegal substance free place which is conducive to learning.
It is unclear as to what actions, if any, the EPISD Board is looking to set in place regarding drugs, alcohol and nicotine '”tobacco products” usage within the school district.
