Border Patrol officials reported on Monday that in separate incidents, 600 pounds of marijuana were confiscated and the arrests of two registered sex offenders were carried out. Dennis Smith, spokesperson for the US Border Patrol, informed that in the first case, agents working near the Eagle Pass checkpoint stopped a 1994 model Chevrolet pick up. The spokesman informed The News Gram that in the bed of the pick up, they found several bags containing 670 pounds of marijuana with a street value of $536,000.00. According to the report, the vehicle was being driven by a man identified as Ernesto Avila who was arrested after a brief chase on foot. Smith reported that after the man's documents were revised, he was previously arrested in 2002 for indecency with a child. Both the drugs and the driver were handed over to the DEA.

EPISD Board Member Rodolfo Lopez informed The News Gram of the fact that the district has chosen to petition the State of Texas through the Texas Association of School Administrators in relation to a resolution concerning the high-stakes standardized testing of public school students. 580 school districts have adopted the resolution and represent 3.5 million students, seventy percent of all school children in objection to overemphasis on testing in our schools.
