Eagle Pass

During the health fair which was held at the Mexican Consulate on Friday, one of the biggest issues of the day was that of diabetes. Exams and screenings were offered to all those who attended as well as blood pressure checks and other types of medical and health related check ups by personnel of UMC among other agencies participating. According to authorities, diabetes rates in Eagle Pass are alarming, and the disease does not discriminate among age groups as even youngsters have been diagnosed. Healthy eating habits have been known to curb these percentages and people are encouraged to eat foods high in fiber as well as fruits and vegetables and other nutritious foods. According to medical authorities many people eat foods high in fats and this leads to the development of chronic disorders such as diabetes. One nurse on hand mentioned the fact that in this area there are many who have had limbs amputated and this is very concerning. This disease also affects the eyesight of the patients and the complications result in the death of these patients. Therefore, detection is the first line of defense and combined with healthy eating habits, there is no reason why diabetes patients cannot lead fulfilling lives.
