EPISD Teacher Substitutes Request Salary Increase from School Board & Admin.

 By Jose G Landa

On Tuesday, March 21st a group of retired teachers currently employed by the Eagle Pass Independent School District as Teacher Substitutes requested that the District consider increasing their pay.

Raquel Hernandez, a retired teacher, and a group of teacher retirees joined her to address the EPISD School Board and Administration during a meeting in which they cordially asked for their request to be taken into consideration.

“As leaders of the school district you all have done an excellent job in providing the staff with a competitive salary. However, we are saddened and disappointed that substitutes have been overlooked for many years. It would be reasonable for you to want to compensate those employees who take care of our school children while their teachers are absent," said Hernandez. "We are here to request that you increase the pay for all substitutes who hold a degree and teachers certificate. Currently our daily pay is either $105 or $112 dollars depending the school’s hours. We are requesting a pay that is at least as much as what the Carrizo Springs Consolidated Independent School District offers, which is $150 daily rate for substitutes. Such an increase would certainly increase our morale. Because ever since the surrounding smaller schools in the region raised their compensation for their substitutes and our district has not, we have felt that we're being taken for granted."

The group then touched base on some of the challenges and issues they feel are now part of the job that merits a pay rate increase.

That includes the Covid-19 factor, health and medical care costs, increase in the cost of living (inflation), and school setting dangers.

"We are here tonight, as a group expressing our faith that you all will give us your support and encouragement. After all, we all belong to the same community. Thank you so much from all of us. We are looking forward to your response," concluded Hernandez.
