When playing the vital position of safety on defense, I, as a coach and fan have always told my defensive backs to promise me one thing, and many if not all of them can tell you, "Whatever you do, promise me that the first play coming your way will not be an interception. I want you to let them know how it's gonna be... all night long." What I'm referring to is if the defensive back so chooses, he will not go after the ball, but to wait until the receiver touches the ball and inflict as much punishment as they can, trying to keep him from holding on to the ball. When I asked Coach Tom Gonzalez about his safeties this year, he mentioned that if this is the case in either of their areas, they will light you up. Especially in Kevin Chisum's case as he feels that his one year of experience at the position can be seen this season as the 6'1", 175 Lb. Junior enters his second season as the starting strong safety for the Eagles. We recall that his grandfather, Frank Chisum was also a highly recruited safety in his days in Cozell Foster's Eagle "D" as well as in Texas A&I's National Championship run in the early 60's alongside All-State Eagle Tackle Enrique "La Gorila" Ibarra.

Eagle Pass
The San Luis Cardinal Connection Inferno and the Mancha Mustangs renewed their rivalry from last season with a defensive battle not for the faint of heart. Inferno quarterback Diego Ibarra had a couple of completions early to Mario Barrientos and Alexander Reyna, but he was unable to connect with Arturo Sanchez for the first down and they were forced to punt on their first possession. The first unit from Mancha was also unable to convert, then the game turned into a defensive struggle highlighted by the exceptional play of Javier Cerda and Alexander Reyna who gave the Mustangs headaches all night and kept the Red and Black at bay pushing them back with quarterback sack after quarterback sack. Ibarra almost connected on a 40 yard bomb with Isaias Ramirez for a touchdown, but a Mustang defender was on the play and Ramirez was unable to cradle the perfect throw that barely cleared the outstretched had o f the Mancha defender. When the game went into overtime, Mancha went first and was unable to score. Then the Inferno threw a pass on first down that was intercepted in the endzone, nullifying the four-play overtime rule. Mancha tried again, this time from the three yard line but again, Reyna and Cerda imposed their will on the Mustangs holding them scoreless in four plays. On their first play in double overtime, Ibarra found Reyna on a swing pass which Mancha stopped at the one yard line, then a handoff to Cerda was stopped behind the line of scrimmage. It was on third down that Ibarra found Rudy Botello all alone in the middle of the endzone for the Inferno touchdown. An incredible read and a great catch as Mancha had all wide receivers well covered. The final score in this game was 6-0. The Inferno meet the Cardinals in a San Luis showdown on Saturday. In other action, the Sam Houston Cougars beat the B&G Club 28-0 and Liberty defeated OLOR 13-0. On Tuesday, the Tigers beat the Coogs 8-0, it was the Stallions over the Raiders 16-0 and the Falcons beat the B&G Club 13-0. In Girl's Division II Volleyball action, the lady Roadrunners befeated lady Fabs 2-1, the Lady Tigers beat the Cardinals 2-1, the Lady Stallions beat the Lady Miners 2-1 and Lady Eagles Blue beat the Tigers 2-0.
