Austin and Dallas are among 20 North American metropolitan areas being considered for a second headquarters for Amazon, the online retail giant announced Thursday morning.

The cities were among several in Texas that had been competing to lure the company. Competition among cities has been fierce, since Amazon says it plans to invest $5 billion on its new headquarters and create "as many as 50,000 high-paying jobs" in the city it picks.

AUSTIN (KXAN) — One person is dead and multiple others are injured after a stabbing on the University of Texas at Austin campus Monday afternoon.

Austin police say they were called to the scene to assist UT police just before 1:50 p.m. at 2101 Speedway, which is near Gregory Gym. Austin-Travis County EMS says one person died and three more were injured.

UT police say one person is in custody and there is no ongoing threat to the campus. Police say the person they apprehended stabbed two people and assaulted one other. Social media posts show the suspect had a large knife holder attached to his waist.

Witnesses tell KXAN they saw one man, who appeared to be a student, grab a “Bowie knife” and stab a person in the neck and stomach.

Students say the first alert they received about the activity from UT was 2:15 p.m., which was nearly 30 minutes after the incident was reported to 911. Another follow-up alert was sent around 2:38 p.m.

A KXAN intern says authorities have evacuated Gregory Gym as of 2:10 p.m. Students say McCombs School of Business is on lockdown. Access to the Perry Castaneda Library has been temporarily due to the investigation. Moody College says they are not on lockdown and the building is open.

    MCHD seeks to ammend bylaws

The Maverick County Hospital District has put forth two amendments to its statutes that could possibly be approved by the State Congress in the form of bills, thus changing parts of the MCHD bylaws.

MCHD Administrator Terri Patlan Contreras recently traveled to Austin, Texas to meet with State Representative Poncho Nevarez and State Senator Carlos Uresti to discuss and set in motion the changing of the proposed statute amendments, which may only be done by the state that created the hospital district and its bylaws.

The changes being sought by the MCHD are relating to an issue from 2015, when then MCHD Board Chair Person and President Joaquin Rodriguez had stepped down, and Vice Chair Juan Manuel Farias was given the nod to take over the responsibilities of chair person in Rodriguez’s absence.

That fact was then challenged by then Trustee Ricardo E. Calderon on the fact that the district’s bylaws did not include the position of vice chair and president, thus a person could not ascend to the vacant position of chair person.

A Texas Attorney General opinion was then requested and later affirmed that the position being disputed was in place since the onset of the district’s creation, so the ascension was valid.
