Born in McAllen, Texas on Sept 10, 1924, Tip grew up in McAllen and was a graduate of McAllen High school. He excelled at sports and held a Texas high school record for longest run from scrimmage for many years. He played football as a freshman at the University of Texas before joining the US Navy during World War II. He served from 1943 to 1946 as a Pharmacist Mate 2nd class. He was attached to the Marines and built an underground hospital on the Nanumea Atoll in the South Pacific Islands. Tip boxed in the service and had 50 fights, losing only 5 fights. He was sent to Duke University for officer’s training and was discharged in 1946. He graduated from Southern Methodist University with a degree in geology. He spent most of his adult life in Eagle Pass, Texas and worked primarily as a produce farmer in Normandy. He also taught Algebra at Eagle Pass High school. He loved to play poker and did so even at the age of 91. He was a valued member of the “coffee club” at the Border Cafe. He was a citizen of the Chickasaw nation from his mother’s side of the family. He will be missed. Visitation will be on Thursday, April 5, 2018 from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. Funeral services will be held Friday, April 6, 2018 at 11:00 a. m. at Barrera Chapel.
