Hector R. Garza “Tolin” (1943-2017)

Hector R. Garza “Tolin”, age 74, passed away peacefully in his sleep on June 26th after a long and valiant battle

against cancer in Sanger, California.  He was born in Eagle Pass, TX to Lazaro and Manuela R. Garza.  Hector was preceded in death by his parents.  He is survived by his wife, Alicia L. Garza; five children, Ana Maria Garza (Duane Elespuru), Marisela G. Chapa (Artemio C. Chapa, Col, USAF, MC), Carlos Hector Garza, Maricruz Rodriguez (Jay Rodriguez), and Julissa Garza; six grandchildren, Daciel A. Galvan (Jennifer Galvan), Larisa Chapa, Talisa Marina Chapa, Alejandro Chapa, Ari Rodriguez, and Alana Rodriguez; and one great-grandchild, Jayden Galvan.  Hector is also survived by his eight siblings and many nieces and nephews.

 

Hector was a 1961 graduate of Eagle Pass High School and went on to attend San Jose City College and San Jose State University in California.  He started working for IBM as a line worker and was able to attain the position of Equal Employment Opportunity (EEO) Officer for the San Jose, CA office of IBM.  Hector successfully owned and operated his own grocery stores in Sanger, CA and Eagle Pass, TX, was a general manager of several manufacturing plants in the Eagle Pass area, and was a strong believer of serving his community.  Hector was a school board member and city councilman for many years in Eagle Pass, TX.  He was appointed by then Texas State Governor, Ann Richards, to serve on the State Community Development Regional Review Committee. Hector also served on the National League of Cities Human Development Policy Committee, the National League of Cities Community and Economic Development Policy Committee, and the Texas Municipal League as Secretary, Vice-President, and President during his tenure.  He enjoyed traveling and spending time with his family.  Hector was a loving husband and friend to his high school sweetheart of 60 years and wife of 53 years, Alicia L. Garza, and a loving father to his children.  He will be forever missed by his family who look forward to the day they are reunited with him in the Lord’s Kingdom.

 

Services will be held at St. Mary’s Catholic Church located at 828 ‘O’ Street, Sanger, CA 93657 at 8:30am on Monday, July 10, 2017.
